What the Orff half covers
Rhythm & Beat
Clapping, stomping, body percussion patterns, and call-and-response that build internal pulse and listening skills from day one — no instruments needed.
Voice & Song
Group singing, chanting, and vocal games that develop pitch, breath, and expression in a safe, non-auditioned, joyful environment.
Melody & Harmony
Pentatonic and diatonic melodies introduced through singing and movement — building the musical ear organically before any notation.
Movement
Rhythm expressed through the body — reinforcing beat, phrase, and musical form and making abstract concepts concrete for all ages.
Improvisation
Children create their own musical ideas within guided frameworks. There are no wrong notes in Orff — every attempt is valid.
Cultural Music
Folk songs, chants, and traditions from around the world — reflecting Burnaby's diverse community and building belonging.
What the ukulele half covers
Beginners · K–Gr 2
Basic strumming patterns, one and two-chord songs, and the joy of making a real sound together from session one.
Intermediate · Gr 3–5
Three and four-chord progressions, familiar songs, and chord transitions. Children can play a song they recognise within a term.
Advanced · Gr 6–7
Fingerpicking patterns, complex chord voicings, reading basic tablature, and introductory music theory in accessible context.
Ensemble Playing
All three levels play together every session — different parts, one sound. Listening, timing, and the satisfaction of making music with others.
How sessions are structured
Warm-up
Rhythm & movement circle
The whole group starts standing. Body percussion, call-and-response, and a rhythm game — no instruments, no experience required. Every child active from the first second.
Orff block
Voice, rhythm & improvisation
Singing, rhythm games, movement, and guided improvisation using Orff-Schulwerk sequencing. Every age participates simultaneously.
No instruments needed
Ukulele block
Group instrument practice
Children work at their level while the educator moves between groups — beginners strum open chords, advanced learners work on fingerpicking and theory.
Ensemble
Play together
Every session closes with the whole group playing a shared song — different parts for different levels, one ensemble sound.
Real stage. Real pride.
Why it works
Brain & literacy development
Community music programs biologically remodel children's brains, improving auditory processing and literacy — active players gain more than listeners (Kraus, Northwestern).
Prosocial skills & empathy
Group ukulele and singing develop sympathy and helpfulness, with frequent peer interaction as the key mechanism (University of Toronto–Mississauga).
Resilience & wellbeing
Orff activities improve ego-resilience, peer relationships, and happiness while reducing anxiety and stress (Kim & Lee, 2023 RCT).
Executive function
Even three months of group instrument training produces measurable gains in self-regulation and reduces hyperactivity in school-age children.
The showcase changes everything
Within 4–6 sessions, the whole group can perform a recognisable song together
A 10–15 minute live family showcase every term — the whole group plays and sings as one ensemble
Three age-based levels play together — the younger child's simple strum supports the older child's melody line
Parents attend expecting a rehearsal and witness a real performance — the most powerful re-enrolment driver in the program
